Selective Pallet Rack in a warehouse

Selective Pallet Rack in Kalamazoo, MI

Selective rack is still the right answer for most general distribution buildings. Every pallet sits on a beam with its face to the aisle, so any position is one forklift trip away. When a building carries hundreds of SKUs and a few pallets of each, nothing beats it for access.

We lay it out for the buildings this market actually has: new 32 ft clear bulk space along I-94, older 18–24 ft plants in Portage and Comstock, and multi-tenant floors in places like Midlink Business Park.

Sizing Pallet Racks to Your Building

Clear height sets the number of beam levels. In a 32 ft clear spec building off Sprinkle Road near Pavilion Commerce Park, a reach truck can work five or six levels. In a 20 ft clear steel building in Battle Creek, three levels plus floor storage is typical. We measure to the lowest obstruction, then back off for lift-off clearance above the highest load.

Beam capacity comes from your heaviest pallet, not the average one. A 48 x 40 pallet of finished goods at 2,000 lb needs a different beam than a 1,200 lb pallet of packaging. We size frames and beams per bay, so you are not paying for steel you will never load.

Aisle Width, Forklift Reach and Layout

A sit-down counterbalanced truck needs roughly a 12–13 ft aisle. A stand-up reach truck works in 9–10 ft. Very narrow aisle equipment can run under 6 ft with guidance. The truck you run, or plan to run, decides how many rows fit between the column lines.

Older plants in Portage and Comstock Township often have tight or uneven column grids. We draw rows to land between columns so you do not lose a bay to every post. In the newer Oshtemo Township buildings we can plan the rack package before the tenant moves in.

Warehouse Racking for High-SKU Pharma and Med-Device Storage

Pharmaceutical and medical-device warehouses in Kalamazoo and Portage need clean, well-labeled, high-SKU storage. Selective rack paired with carton flow at the pick face keeps full pallets above and each-picks at waist height.

Labeling, wire decking and flue spacing get worked out on the drawing so the system arrives complete. Every frame is anchored to the floor.
